A master of the mystical arts and powerful sorcerer, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is an essential member of the Avengers. While many Marvel superheroes have multiple identities and powers, the Sorcerer Supreme is unique in that he has mastered the ability to travel across the multiverse to battle the forces of evil. As such, it makes sense that he would have to take on a variety of different looks. The character first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics in Strange Tales #110 (cover-dated July 1963). Designed by Steve Ditko, the Doctor Strange costume is instantly recognizable as a classic. The blue tunic and Cloak of Levitation are a staple of his look, even though he's often seen in other colors and outfits. As the series went on, Strange's wardrobe grew to reflect his changing personality and abilities. He became more occult-based and less like a traditional superhero. The dark blue tunic paired with the red cloak and amulet of the Eye of Agamotto helped create a look that's both unique and iconic.During the extreme 90s, the pocket dimension of 2099 gave the Marvel Universe a futuristic makeover. The Doctor Strange of this reality wore a suit that looked more feudal than futuristic, with leather straps and flowing cloth. While the look was still unique, it didn't quite work for the character. In the same vein, the alternate world of Mutant X has given us several altered versions of Marvel heroes. One of these changes is in the look of Doctor Strange, who's wraithlike appearance has more in common with something out of a Dungeons and Dragons monster manual than a human wizard. Fortunately, the Cloak of Levitation is there to save the day. After the events of Infinity War, it's become clear that the Doctor Strange of this timeline has a whole lot more in store for the future. Whether that's more adventures with the Avengers or fighting off the Inhumans remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: his look will change. The tunic and cloak of the original costume will remain a part of his look, but the rest of his outfit is likely to get an upgrade. As the film series continues, the costume designer for the movie adaptations of the characters that populate the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Alexandra Byrne, has been hard at work. While the costumes she's designed have been big and bold, they've also subtly and powerfully reflected key milestones on the heroes' journeys. And as drstrangecostume to the MCU, this Doctor Strange is no exception.
